2012 Ferrari California Updated with More Power, Less Weight

The Ferrari California will be mildly updated for the 2012 model year, with more power and a modest reduction in curb weight. According to Car Magazine, Ferrari revealed to dealers that the California scores 30 more horsepower and loses 66 pounds.

The performance updates reportedly come from reprogramming the computer for the 4.3-liter V-8 engine and re-machining the exhaust manifold. Power jumps from 453 hp to 483 hp, while torque climbs from 358 lb-ft to 373 lb-ft.

In addition, Car says Ferrari has trimmed 66 pounds from the California’s curb weight, bringing it down to about 3750 pounds. The diet was accomplished by using lightweight aluminum alloy materials for some parts of the car’s chassis.

The Ferrari’s optional magnetorheological suspension has been revamped so it can change state in a quicker fashion. As a result, it takes less time for the dampers to switch from hard to soft rebound. The 2012 California also will wear a restyled front fascia and feature an upgraded infotainment system.

All told, the mechanical changes should make the California slightly quicker both in a straight line and when the road gets twisty. Car reports that the refreshed Ferrari California will go into production in January 2012.
