2012 Comic-Con: Hyundai's Latest Elantra is One Mean Zombie-Fighting Machine

7

Ladies and gents, meet the latest four-wheeled zombie-deterrant that will help you live a little longer on post-apocalyptic planet. In theory, that is.

Based on a new 2013 Hyundai Elantra Coupe, it’s writer Robert Kirkman’s interpretation of the ultimate modern day post-apocalyptic zombie survival machine. In case you’re questioning Kirkman’s zombie knowhow, or just wondering who he is, he’s the creator of the hugely successful comic book, The Walking Dead.

Kirkman and Hyundai produced the mean little machine you see here as part of the "Hyundai Undead" program celebrating the book’s 100th issue. Without a doubt, the Zombie Survival Machine -- or ZSM -- shown at Future US' booth was one of the most anticipated vehicle displays at Comic-Con 2012 in San Diego.

Built by DesignCraft Fabrication (the same guys that build many of Formula Drift contenders, among other demo and racing machines), the Elantra is equipped with all the right zombie-fighting stuff.

There’s the massive spiked plow to mow over any aggressive undead; an armored roof hatch that affords those inside a better vantage; massive auxiliary off-road-spec lamps atop the roof; a hidden winch on the nose; and beefier tires wrapped around forged Volk Racing wheels sporting evil serrated blades. Let us not forget the welded caged window openings to prevent any unwanted intruders.

Inside, things get even more interesting. There’s a CB radio to communicate to other survivors; a set of machetes to slice and dice; some very useful explosives; and a fully functioning NOS system for when there’s a need for speed.

It may not be the fastest or the burliest ride to be in when the zombies run rampant, but the two-door Hyundai is, indeed, an interesting take on a popular type of vehicle. Would it be the one we'd put in our "Just In Case" parking spot? Throw on a machine gun and we'd surely take it for a spin.
