Chrysler is keeping up its reputation of for making safe cars: its 2012 Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan have joined several other models under the Chrysler umbrella to be named an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick.
Achieving the top mark of “Good” in all three testing categories of frontal, side, and rear crash protection, both family haulers also received top scores in rollover tests. Such high scores can be attributed to all the standard safety equipment that Chrysler minivans come with. Electronic stability control, front seat mounted airbags, three-row side curtain airbags, driver-side knee airbag, and all-speed traction control all come as standard equipment.
Additional safety features are available, including rear park assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross path detection. Both minivans also surpassed the IIHS’s 4.0 roof crush strength-to-weight ratio rating requirement with a score of 4.51, which is the highest among minivans tested.  The government requires a minimum of 1.5.
The minivans join the 2012 Top Safety Pick ranks along with the 2012 Fiat 500, which earned the mantle last month.  The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Patriot, Chrysler 300 and 200, Dodge Durango, Charger, Journey, and Avenger were also named IIHS 2011 Top Safety Picks earlier this year.
