2012 Chevrolet Impala Could Receive 3.6-Liter V-6 Engine

The Chevrolet Impala may be receiving a much-needed powertrain replacement for the 2012 model year, GMInsideNews.com reports. GM's 3.6-liter V-6, the same base engine in the Cadillac CTS and Chevrolet Camaro, might make it into the Impala for the 2012 model year.

In the Cadillac CTS, the 3.6-liter V-6 makes 304 horsepower and is mated to a six-speed automatic or manual transmission. GMInsideNews.com says such a combination will appear in the 2012 Impala with an all-new variant of the 3.6-liter engine. Currently, the Impala outsells every Chevrolet besides the Malibu and Silverado with its four-speed automatic and choice of a 211-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 or a 230-horsepower 3.9-liter V-6. Fuel economy is 17-19/27-29 mpg city/highway.

Don't expect too many other changes for the 2012 Impala besides the engine and transmission. Adding the 3.6-liter V-6 engine to the Impala should make it quicker and reduce the percentage of cars that are sold to fleets.
