2012 BMW M6 Convertible Spotted Cold-Weather Testing

With the gorgeous new 2012 BMW 650i Convertible on its way to dealers this spring, anticipation for the hotly upgraded M6 can only build. Now, our friends at Motor Trend have caught a camo-clad M6 drop top undergoing cold-weather testing.

The car caught in the hinterlands is wearing BMW's trademark swirly camouflage, yet still gives us a good look at what the next M6 will look like. Larger wheels and front air ducts will most definitely be part of the package, but the majority of the car's svelte figure echoes that stays intact. Power will likely be provided by a version of the twin-turbocharged, 4.4-liter V-8 found in the X5 and X6 M. In the M-spec SUVs, the V-8 produces a healthy 555 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque. Expect this engine to produce similar power, and for it to be paired with a high-performance version of BMW's seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Although styling seems almost finished, we have no word what materials the M6's body panels will be fashioned from. Thanks in part to the new  MegaCity electric vehicle program, BMW has been investing heavily in carbon fiber, so there is a good bet that the lightweight material could be strategically used to shave weight from the large M6.

With sharp looks borrowed the 2012 6-Series and the serious power of a BMW M-tuned engine, we're excited by how the new M6 is shaping up, and can't wait to lay our hands on one. Until BMW decides to release the official skinny on the new car, head over to Motor Trend to see the complete gallery of spy shots.
