2011 Hyundai Sonata Helps Break First-Quarter Sales Record

Hyundai just unveiled two new versions of its new Sonata mid-size sedan, which should only increase the car’s appeal. The 2011 Hyundai Sonata is already leading the company’s sales and helped it break its first quarter sales record.

Hyundai sold 47,002 vehicles in March this year -- a 15-percent increase over last year. Impressively, Hyundai’s new Sonata accounted for a total of 40 percent of those sales with a total of 18,935 units. This represents a roughly 53-percent year-to-year sales increase for Hyundai’s mid-size sedan. Sonata went from one of lowest volume selling mid-size sedans on the market to the fourth-best seller. In March it trailed Toyota’s Camry (36,251 sales), Honda’s Accord (29,120 sales), Nissan's Altima (24,649 sales), and Ford’s Fusion (22,773 sales). The new Sonata did manage to beat Chevrolet’s Malibu (17,750 sales).

In addition to a new Sonata, Hyundai released a new Tucson this year. Sales of the Tucson more than doubled due to the introduction of the new model. Sales of Hyundai’s refreshed Santa Fe also jumped around 63 percent. Hyundai’s Genesis luxury sedan posted its ninth month of consecutive sales increases, with sales increasing 32 percent over last year.
