Volkswagen's latest hot hatch is about to get even hotter. Last week we showed you pictures of the production-spec 2010 GTI. Now we've gotten word that VW is readying a more potent 270 hp version of its new hatchback called the Golf R20.

In past years the racy R32 was the more powerful R-series version of the Golf/Rabbit available in the U.S. However, the R32's heavy VR6 engine and its all-wheel-drive system made it sluggish compared to competition like the Mazdaspeed3.

The new Golf R20 will do away with the six-cylinder engine of the former R-series in favor of a higher-powered version of the GTI's turbocharged 2.0-liter. The hyper hatchback should be capable of zero to 60 mph times in the mid to low five second range and a governed top speed of 155 mph.

Initially, three door versions of the Golf R20 are expected to be available with the possibility of a five door model later on. We expect the exterior to be enhanced with more aggressive front and rear spoilers with dual center-exit exhaust pipes.

The new R-series Golf will debut on May 21 at the ADAC 24-hour race at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. VW will also launch 2010 Scirocco R20T. It will be equipped with the same engine as the Golf R20, but unlike the Golf R20, it will be front-wheel-drive.

The more exciting difference between the two cars tough, is the Golf R20 will be available in the U.S. It is expected to go on sale first in Europe in late 2009 and if trends are any indication, the U.S. version will show up about six months later.
