Steve Saleen celebrates the 45th birthday of the Ford Mustang with two tuned versions of the latest pony car. The SMS 460 will be the tamer of the two steeds, while the SMS 460X will be the wild stallion.

As shown by the sketch, the Mustangs get a thorough visual overhaul. Exterior enhancements include new front and rear fascias, side skirts, an air induction hood, and a high down-force rear wing. Changes were made inside too. The cars come with SMS performance seats featuring the patented Signature Series chevron stripes. Dash and interior panels covered in hand-stitched high-quality leather round out the interior upgrades.

Engines in both cars also get a hearty overhaul. The SMS 460's 4.6-liter V-8 packs a much harder punch thanks to a SMS 296 Supercharger. The forced induction raises the output to a healthy 470 horsepower and 427 lb-ft of torque. It is available with a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission.

The V-8 in the SMS 460X takes it to a whole 'nother level. It boasts new internals and revised headwork that raise the displacement to 5.0-liters. With the addition of the same SMS 296 Supercharger, the SMS 460X churns out 655 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. Because of the extra power, the 6-speed SMST manual transmission is the only gearbox available.

Saleen says the SMS 460 will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in the "low" 4 second range and the SMS 460X will do the same in the "lower" 4 second range. In other words, yeah-they're both pretty fast. The souped-up stangs also receive Steve's signature Watt's linkage suspension with all-new geometry along with SMS brakes equipped at all four corners.

Don't be fooled by the name, SMS is a new company but its leader, Steve Saleen, has been tuning Mustangs for 25 years. The SMS 460 and 460X celebrate the Mustang's 45th birthday Saleen-style and continue to keep the tradition alive.
