2010 Ford Fusion Four-Cylinder Bests Camry, Accord Fuel Economy at 34 mpg

Though the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid returns some excellent fuel economy numbers, it doesn't take a hybrid to be fuel efficient: Ford's revealed that even a base 2010 Fusion S, equipped with a four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic, returns 23/34 mpg city/highway.

Impressive figures, and at this stage, they seem to be class-leading in midsize sedans. A 2009 Honda Accord four-cylinder returns 21/30 mpg city/highway, while a 2009 Toyota Camry with the four-banger delivers 21/31 mpg city/highway. Though both use five-speed automatics and could be considered at a disadvantage to the Fusion, a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu with the four-cylinder/ six-speed automatic combo is rated for 22/33 mpg city/highway.
