2010 Detroit: Cadillac Plans V- or Platinum Forms For Each Model

Cadillac General Manager Brian Nesbitt announced this morning that V- or Platinum models of each model are in the works, helping further push the division's offerings upmarket.

With the unveiling of the XTS, the Epsilon-based all-wheel-drive large sedan that replaces the DTS and STS, most of this sub-brand strategy is in place. The CTS line, including the new coupe and the Sport Wagon, will be available in V-Series trim, with its 556-horsepower, 551 pound-foot 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 and choice of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. The still unnamed and unofficial rear-wheel-drive 3 Series competitor would be another candidate for the V-Series treatment.

The Escalade Platinum Hybrid already is on sale, and the XTS, of course, will be available as a Platinum model, as well. If any one model is likely to get both treatments, it’s the CTS, which has room for an upscale variant with high-end interior materials.

No matter. The CTSes you care about carry the V-badge. Cadillac estimates the CTS-V coupe will sprint from 0-60 mph in the same 3.9 seconds it takes the CTS-V sedan, even though the coupe is some 50 pounds lighter mostly because of its smaller sunroof. The coupe’s rear suspension geometry has been tweaked, too, because the coupe’s wider rear fenders accommodate wider rear tires. While no quicker than the CTS-V sedan in a straight line, Cadillac says the CTS-V coupe corners faster. It goes on sale late this summer at the same time as the standard CTS coupe.

A CTS-V wagon is still unconfirmed, although disguised prototypes have been spotted. Because of the less-stout structure inherent to station wagons, Cadillac will have to tune yet a third variant of the CTS-V’s rear suspension.

The V-coupe’s interior gets a tasty special treatment, with yellow stitching on black leather, and matching yellow “suede-like” Recaro seat and interior door inserts. It’s Alcantara, although Cadillac can’t call it that, because it has paid for the material without paying for the rights to use the trademark. Clearly, Cadillac still isn’t nearly as upmarket as BMW or Mercedes-Benz.

You are saying that by paying for the rights to the trademark, that makes a car more upmarket? Maybe to some stuck up snob who likes to brag and point out their labels, but just how dumb can we get? :confused: If the material is the same, than the material is the same, REGARDLESS whether the rights to a trademark were paid for or not. Frankly, I put Cadillac above both Mercedes and BMW. Cadillac has one thing both those brands lack sorely in...passion. Style. BMW's (particularly the 3 series) looks like a rolling jellybean going down the road, and the interior screams "BORING." Make mine a Caddy any day.
