Ford was busy touting the various techno-driven features inside the 2011 Edge this morning, but the Blue Oval also managed to slip us a few details on future products and powertrains.

During its press conference this morning, Ford decided to whet our appetites with some teasers of new product to come later this year. Not too many specific details were dropped, but we were able to glean some important nuggets.

Over the next year, Ford will introduce six new transmissions and nine new or improved powertrains, with the EcoBoost engine family playing a starring role. The new 2.0L four-cylinder EcoBoost engine made its debut today in the 2011 Ford Edge and Ford let it be known that the redesigned Explorer will debut later this year with the EcoBoost four-cylinder on board. Spreading the green around has helped Ford post the largest improvement in fleet average fuel economy of any automaker over the last five years and the company is eager to continue that trend in the new decade.

Complimenting the EcoBoost on the green front will be several new alternative powertrains. Two new versions of the Transit Connect van debuted today, one with a battery-powered, full electric powertrain and one converted from gasoline power to compressed natural gas. Both will go on sale by the end of this year, and the EV represents the first of four new electric vehicles from Ford that will debut in the next four years. Following it will be a battery-powered Focus, a new plug-in hybrid based on Ford’s C-segment platform and in 2012 the next generation of Ford’s hybrid technology found in the Fusion and Escape.
