2009 New York: Where In The World Is The Suzuki Kizashi?

One thing you won’t; see at the 2009 New York Auto Show? The 2010 Suzuki Kizashi.

Although the Big Apple has hosted the premiere of the Kizashi 3 concept (pictured), Suzuki’s not quite ready to pull the wraps off its all-new midsize sedan.

“We’re waiting for the air to clear,” said Gene Brown, vice-president of marketing and public relations at American Suzuki. “In the midst of the worst economic period I’ve seen in my lifetime, we won’t be showing the car [Wednesday] or Thursday.”

The delay in its introduction, however, doesn’t reflect a delay in development. Contrary to earlier reports, Suzuki hasn’t shelved or postponed the Kizashi program, and its launch hasn’t been delayed in the least.

That’s important for the brand – although it’s seen some growth thanks to the success of its compact SX4 and the badge-engineered Equator pickup, it needs a midsize sedan offering to fill the gap left by the Daewoo-built Verona. Suzuki’s developed the Kizashi with North American and European customers in mind, and has even sent the car out to the hallowed Nurburgring for chassis development.

At this point, expect to see the Kizashi in its production-ready form in the summer, with sales beginning late in 2009.
