The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall for the 2007 Ford Five Hundred and the 2007 Mercury Montego. The sedans’ fuel tanks may have been built incorrectly, potentially allowing fuel to leak from the tanks.

The Problem: Some fuel tanks produced by Visteon may have poorly welded seams between the tank and the fuel-filler neck. Over time, or after a rear-end impact, the seams could crack. This could cause the check-engine light to illuminate, produce a gasoline odor inside the vehicle, or allow fuel to leak from the tank. In the latter case, the leak could trigger a fire. Ford says it has not received any reports of fires resulting from this problem.
The Fix: Ford will examine affected vehicles and replace any tanks with a problem. The recall will begin August 15.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 2945 2007 Ford Five Hundred and 2007 Mercury Montego sedans
