1955 BMW 501 on eBay

1955 Bmw 501

In his Illustrated BMW Buyer's Guide, author Ken Gross said it best:; "If you're in love with BMW history, you may wish to own a 501."; We can't think of a better reason to try and scoop up this remarkable 1955 BMW 501 sedan that's currently listed on eBay.

As the first post-war production car built by the Bayerische Motoren Werke, the 501 certainly is a piece of history.; With its ostentatious appointments and curvy styling (we see where the 7-series gets its trunk lid from), the 501 was nicknamed the "Baroque Angel," but it could perhaps be termed the "Baroque Angel of Death."; While the car had a good reputation for comfort and luxury, manufacturing costs and poor sales nearly killed the company.

Between 1952 and 1961, BMW produced just under 20,000 examples of the 501 and its derivatives; few made the journey into the U.S, making this 1955 501/6 an unusual find.; Odder yet is that the car has been stored for the last 22 years, making its condition - despite some noticeable rust along the rocker panels - somewhat impressive.

Impressive, sure, but perhaps it's also expensive.; The seller is asking for at least $10,000, and we'd imagine a limited parts supply could drive restoration costs skyward from there.; That said, it may well be an ideal project car for the ultimate BMW buff.
