1.5 Millionth New Mini Rolls Off Assembly Line

Who says a belated birthday present can’t be significant? The 1.5 millionth “new” Mini rolled off the assembly line this morning, weeks after the brand celebrated its 50th anniversary.

“This is a great day for the plant,” said Ian Robertson, Mini’s director of sales and marketing, “and a wonderful milestone to reach in the 50th birthday year of Mini.”

We’re not sure how the milestone could become any more historic. Prior to re-tooling for the all-new Mini launched in 2001, the facility had long been responsible for building the original Mini. In fact, the Oxford plant built the very first example on May 8, 1959. Between then and 2000, nearly 5.3 million “classic” Minis were built.

The 1.5 millionth “new” Mini, a Clubman painted in Chili Red, has reportedly been sold to a British customer.
