NEWS: Toyota Tundra TRD Pro to Race in Baja 1000

When we drove the 2015 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro in the deserts around Las Vegas, off-road racer Ivan “Ironman” Stewart surmised that the stock truck's suspension was so good that it could tackle and even finish the Baja 1000 race. Now Toyota is staying true to its word, as this Toyota Tundra TRD Pro that’s remarkably close to stock will compete in the grueling 2014 Baja 1000 off-road endurance race in Mexico this November.

The Tundra will be competing in the Full Size Stock Class, meaning that it can sport only minimal modifications compared with the 2015 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro on sale at Toyota dealerships. The race truck has Bilstein shocks and Eibach springs like the standard TRD Pro, and it's powered by the same 5.7-liter V-8 engine. Modifications include larger 37-inch off-road BF Goodrich tires, a roll cage, racing seats and harnesses, a custom TRD exhaust, a full set of Hella HID lights up front, and a more secure fuel cell.
Acting as navigator for the racing team made up of experienced off-road drivers will be Mike Sweers, chief engineer for Toyota trucks. Sweers said in a statement that this race will be a test for the TRD Pro series in some ways, as the nearly stock truck will surely be put through some tough terrain over this year’s approximately 1130-mile long course through the Baja California peninsula in Mexico.
