Report: 2017 Lincoln Navigator Goes Aluminum, MKZ Refreshed in 2015

The refreshed 2015 Lincoln Navigator that debuted at this year's Chicago auto show (pictured) won't stick around too long. By the 2017 model year, according to Automotive News, an all-new version of the luxury SUV will arrive with aluminum construction.

The Lincoln Navigator, which is related to the less expensive Ford Expedition, should be redesigned in late 2016 as a 2017 model. Switching to an aluminum body isn't a huge surprise, given that Ford has already invested heavily in switching the 2015 Ford F-150 to the lightweight material. As the Navigator and Expedition also ride on modified truck chassis, it stands to reason lessons learned from building the F-150 from aluminum could be applied to those full-size SUVs.

Automotive News also reports the Lincoln MKZ midsize sedan will be refreshed in the middle of next year as a 2016 model. In addition to visual tweaks to the car that debuted at the 2011 New York auto show, the updated MKZ reportedly may ditch some of its awkward capacitive-touch interior controls in favor of traditional buttons and knobs.

Full-size sedan still in the works

As we reported extensively in April, the Lincoln MKS replacement will be markedly different from the current car. When it arrives in 2016 as a 2017 model, we believe the car will use an enlarged version of the CD4 front- and all-wheel-drive platform used by cars like the Lincoln MKZ and Ford Fusion. Automotive News says the car will resurrect the Continental name, despite our earlier assertions that MKL was a possible badge. Because the new full-size sedan will be an important model for Lincoln's entry into the Chinese auto market, the car will have a much roomier back seat than today's MKS (pictured below).

Finally, a production 2016 Lincoln MKX based on the concept shown at the Beijing auto show will debut in late 2015. Automotive News predicts a new 3.0-liter EcoBoost V-6 turbo engine.

If they bring back the Continental name than great but will the car be excellent for a front-wheel drive model?  Lets hope that this car has superb engineering, looks, technology and excellent fit and finish to warrant the Continental name?
If the next car is mediocre, the Continental name will be a joke and will not matter much.
The design language (of Aston Martin) that Ford adopted is exceptionally attractive.
The design language that Lincoln adopted (from a Baleen whale) is exceptionally unattractive.
Lincoln needs to get rid of this design philosophy, and start anew. 
Let's toast the return of the Continental name!  When I was a little guy my dad drove a 1969 Lincoln Continental with the "coach doors."  It would be great to bring back the "coach doors," distinctive styling and to a new Lincoln Continental that can truly compete with the world's best automobiles.  The MKC is a solid start in the right direction.  Let's hear it for Lincoln Continental!
That would be great if they bring back the Continental name.
