The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has always been the vehicle of choice for foreign dignitaries and other VIPs around the world, and it was only a matter of time before we saw the armored version of the new, sixth-generation S-Class. The Mercedes-Benz S600 Guard premiered today with a whole host of modifications aimed at protecting its occupants with the highest level of safety.
As you might have guessed, the Mercedes-Benz S600 guard is based on the standard S600 model and is powered by the same 6.0-liter V-12 that makes 523 hp and 612 lb-ft of torque. That’s plenty to lug around the extra weight of the Guard version, as this specially prepared S-Class is fitted with all sorts of reinforcements to the structure, the body shell, and the glass, contributing to a significantly higher curb weight. Special steel is inserted into the gaps between the body and the structure and the glass is coated with polycarbonate on the inside, helping the S600 Guard provide not only ballistic protection but also protection from explosive devices.
This new Mercedes-Benz S600 Guard thus achieves the highest VR9 level of ballistic protection and meets ERV2010 explosive protection requirements according to German measurements. Despite all of the modifications, though, the S600 Guard is barely distinguishable from a standard S600, with only a few extra lighting elements on the exterior giving it away. The Mercedes-Benz S600 Guard also offers all of the same luxury features as the standard car, including the optional Chauffeur Package with specially outfitted rear seats and all of the active safety features that make up the semi-autonomous Intelligent Drive system.
There are a few special features included on the S600 Guard, like a fire extinguisher, opaque rear window blinds, and an emergency fresh air system in the case of smoke or gases from outside the vehicle. Mercedes-Benz also says that the car’s Airmatic air suspension has been adapted to deal with the extra weight of the protection modifications, and special run-flat tires that can drive up to 19 miles even when damaged are standard. The top speed is limited to 130 mph for weight reasons.
Like other Mercedes Guard models, this Mercedes-Benz S600 Guard will be for sale by order, and the company has not yet announced pricing.
