Customized McLaren P1 Heads to Pebble Beach

Most drivers would consider the McLaren P1 a pretty special car as-is, but one lucky shopper thought differently and sought to make his car even more special. His one-off P1, customized by McLaren Special Operations, will be shown later this month at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in southern California.

Compared to the 170 examples of the McLaren P1 that have been built so far, this car receives special silver trim for the radiators that sit behind the carbon-fiber air inlets, while the nose badge is painted McLaren Orange. The P1's bodywork and wheels are painted an exclusive color called Sterling Grey, while the brake calipers echo the nose badge's orange theme. Genuine gold heatshields surround the center-exit exhaust, and there's a new aluminum rear mesh grille design.

Interior upgrades are similarly impressive, with Alcantara wrapping the MSO-specific steering wheel, carbon-fiber used for the shells of the bucket seats that are equipped with four-point safety harnesses, and additional McLaren Orange accents on the center console.

The McLaren P1 is unchanged mechanically, meaning it offers a total of 903 hp and a claimed top speed of 217 mph. That power figure comes from combining a 727-hp, 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine and a 176-hp electric motor. When we drove the standard McLaren P1, we said it is, "brutally benign. This supercar wants you to feel comfortable going fast but constantly reminds you that you could go far faster if you were a better driver."

Before you get your checkbook ready, note that this car has already been spoken for: it was commissioned by an anonymous McLaren customer from somewhere within North America.

At Pebble Beach, McLaren Special Operations will also show off a new version of the MSO 650S Spider. It's based on the MSO 650S shown at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, but with Cerulean Blue paint, satin carbon-fiber exterior accent pieces, and chrome 10-spoke wheels. Blue-stitched black leather adorns the cabin, along with a special plaque signed by McLaren Automotive design director Frank Stephenson. If that's not enough, customers also get a matching leather bag designed by McLaren Special Operations. MSO will offer just 50 units of its customized 650S Spiders. The car's twin-turbo 3.8-liter V-8 offers 641 hp, enough to send the Spider to 60 mph in a claimed 2.9 seconds.

Recently, MSO has also shown off concept modified versions of the outgoing 12C coupe and 650 coupe. McLaren's next major project is the launch of the P1 GTR, a 986-hp, track-oriented version of the P1 supercar that will be offered only to existing owners of the P1.
