Report: Second-Generation Subaru BRZ Planned

Another generation of the Subaru BRZ sports car -- twinned with the Scion FR-S/Toyota 86 -- is in the works. That's the word from Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, president of Subaru parent company Fuji Heavy Industries, who told reporters in Tokyo that the affordable sports car will continue for the foreseeable future.

"If I were to be told that [it was discontinued], I'd pass out," Yoshinaga told Automotive News. "It's not going to be just one generation."

His comments counter recent reports in the Australian press that Toyota 86 chief engineer Tetsuya Tada said his company planned to ditch the joint sports car to pursue a collaboration with BMW on hybrid sports cars.

When asked whether the Toyota 86 (aka. Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S) would continue to be sold, Tada told Australia's Drive, "Maybe, but this is not decided yet."

Contrary to that report, Yoshinaga told AN that Toyota and Subaru will work together on a second generation of the car. However, he reportedly admitted that the Subaru BRZ couldn't exist alone, as the car's business case relies on the additional volume of the Toyota/Scion version.

In the U.S., the Subaru BRZ has sold 4295 units through the first six months of this year, while the Scion FR-S enjoyed 7662 sales. In 2013, the FR-S outsold the BRZ by a two-to-one ratio, at 18,327 cars to 8587.

This is far from the first time the companies have publicly sparred over the future of the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S. Although Toyota persists in showing its FT-86 Open Concept and hints at the possibility of a four-door version, Subaru's Yoshinaga told reporters last November neither version would come to fruition.

"I understand well that Toyota is receiving strong requests from the American market for the car," Yoshinaga told Automotive News. "But the biggest challenge is meeting our internal safety standards. We make the car, so if we don't make it, it can't happen."

It is an excellent car, but I guess it is not selling as well as the Scion because not many young people visit the Subaru dealerships.

No one was worried. It was wild speculation from a few automotive journalists based on one irrelevant comment made by an automotive exec. Stop reporting unnews TMZ, er, Automobile Magazine.

These cars are excellent. I saw a video where a turbo powered 86 outran a Mclaren and it was spectacular. The Mclaren did well, but the 86 drift around the corners and turns without cutting acceleration was superb. And to think, the Mclaren has more power, and style but still couldnt keep up to the agility of the 86.

Hopefully more power and more rubber on the road.

All manufacturers do these days is sell an upgraded Kw spec, big deal. Over looking grip and handling. If the new BRZ shows that it has better " grip and didn't slide around so much, more people would be interested, Me I prefer grip more grip and even more grip thanks ! I try lots of tyres on my coupe to get the best performance and grip and like to sometimes corner hard to the edge of cohesion but never breaking loose. These cars have a reputation for a loose rear end. Not good. That needs to be addressed as well as those ridiculous skinny tyres..

Flat 6 next time around?

I've never seen one on the road, only in the magazines. You have to wonder what they're going to do different.

If you want it to sell give it more power! No one likes it when you get your doors blown off by a thirty year old woody station wagon......and have no hope to ever catch up......
