We’ve got our best look yet at the 2016 Jaguar XE sports sedan with this front end shot, and this photo adds a crucial detail that wasn’t included in the teaser Jaguar issued earlier this year at the Geneva auto show: an “S” badge in the grille.
The new detail seems to confirm information in our 2016 Jaguar XE Sneak Preview, which said that there would be a high-powered version of the XE sport sedan with the 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 that’s found in many other Jaguar models like the F-Type, XF, and XJ. This larger engine will slot in above the company’s new Ingenium turbocharged four-cylinder engines that will be featured in the 2016 XE in turbocharged gasoline and diesel forms. In the U.S., the Jaguar XE is likely to use this 2.0-liter Ingenium gasoline engine as the base powertrain with an output of more than 240 hp.
The current supercharged V-6 engine makes 340 hp in the XJ and XF models, so we would expect similar numbers from this application in the smaller XE sedan. We can also assume that the 2016 Jaguar XE S will offer rear- and all-wheel drive, as we already know that this engine mates with Jaguar’s all-wheel-drive system and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Given the 2016 Jaguar XE’s lightweight aluminum construction, this supercharged engine should provide the S version of the XE with impressive performance. We see it lining up well with other sport sedans like the 333-hp Audi S4, the 321-hp Cadillac ATS, and the 300-hp BMW 335i.
Stay tuned for the 2016 Jaguar XE’s official debut in just a few weeks on September 8 as we learn full information about this new compact sedan lineup.
