2015 Porsche Cayenne Refreshed, Adds S E-Hybrid Model

As we suspected from earlier spy shots, there will be a refreshed lineup of 2015 Porsche Cayenne SUVs headed to showrooms later this year, including a new plug-in S E-Hybrid model. Face-lifted styling brings the new Cayenne in line with that of the smaller Porsche Macan, while mechanical changes echo moves Porsche made with the Panamera for the 2014 model year.

Visually, the 2015 Porsche Cayenne enjoys updated front and rear styling. Porsche redesigned the front fenders and hood with more aggressive and purposeful looks, including sharper intakes with new air fins, and a larger grille. Bi-Xenon headlights are standard on all Cayenne models excluding the high-performance Cayenne Turbo, which has its own LED headlight setup with dynamic light technology. Around the rear, the 2015 Porsche Cayenne takes on more precise, slightly less rounded shapes. The taillights are widened and narrowed to look more like those of the Panamera and smaller Macan, while the license plate recess is stretched and tightened to match the overhauled rear bumper and quad exhaust. Inside, the Cayenne now boasts a new multifunction sport steering wheel said to be inspired by the look of the 918 Spyder's wheel, and the rear seats now offer ventilation as optional equipment.

2015 Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid

Just like the 2014 Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid replaced an older hybrid, the 2015 Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid replaces the outgoing S Hybrid variant. Porsche’s first plug-in hybrid SUV uses the Panamera’s same 3.0-liter supercharged 333-hp V-6 engine and 95-hp electric motor, with a 10.8-kWh lithium-ion battery (larger than the Panamera’s 9.4-kWh battery). Together, the hybrid system totals 416 hp at 5500 rpm, with 435 lb-ft of torque on tap between 1250 and 4000 rpm. The Cayenne S E-Hybrid sprints to 62 mph in a brisk 5.4 seconds and can go on to hit up to 151 mph, although top speed is limited to 78 mph on all-electric energy.

There’s no word yet on what kind of fuel economy we’ll see from the new Cayenne S E-Hybrid, but Porsche claims that all new Cayenne models benefit from increased efficiency. Drivetrain changes, an improved automatic start-stop system, and active air flaps for better cooling and aerodynamics all supposedly contribute as fuel-saving measures.

2015 Porsche Cayenne S

The 2015 Porsche Cayenne S swaps out its 400-hp V-8 engine for a smaller and more powerful twin-turbo V-6. The new engine, also at work in the 2014 Panamera S, churns out 420 hp at 6000 rpm and 406 lb-ft of torque from 1350 to 4500 rpm. Porsche supplies the new Cayenne S with a standard eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission, helping the SUV scoot along from 0-62 mph 0.4 seconds faster than before. The deed is now done in 5.2 seconds (adding the Sport Chrono Package shaves off an additional 0.1 seconds). Fuel economy is also expected to improve, although EPA figures are not yet available.

Diesel, Turbo

Porsche says the Cayenne Diesel gets better fuel economy than last year’s model, even though the turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 carries on with the same 240 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. More significant upgrades grace the range-topping 2015 Porsche Cayenne Turbo, which now packs 20 more hp and 37 more lb-ft of torque for a total of 520 hp and 563 lb-ft. Top speed comes in at a startling 173 mph, and it’ll be just 4.2 seconds (4.1 with the Sport Chrono Package) before the Cayenne Turbo eclipses 62 mph from a stop.

The Cayenne has continued to sell astonishingly well in the U.S. and abroad, despite its ever-escalating price. The car is even more expensive for the new model: Including destination fees, the 2015 Porsche Cayenne Diesel now costs $62,695 (an increase of $5100), $75,095 for the Cayenne S (up $7300), $77,395 for the Cayenne S E-Hybrid (the S Hybrid was $5500 less), and $114,595 for the Cayenne Turbo (an increase of $3200).

The 2015 Porsche Cayenne goes on sale in the U.S. on November 1.
