2015 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG Coupe Debuts With V-12 Power

Despite what its higher numerical badge might suggest, the new 2015 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG coupe isn't actually any quicker off the line than the V-8-powered S63 AMG coupe. But that doesn't really bother buyers, explains AMG boss Tobias Moers, because, "There are AMG fans for whom our V-12 biturbo engine is the measure of all things."

Just as the S550 and S63 AMG coupes closely mimic the sedan versions, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG coupe is simply a two-door version of the S65 AMG sedan that was shown at the 2013 Los Angeles auto show. At its heart is a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V-12 engine good for 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. A seven-speed automatic transmission (which has a wet clutch instead of a torque converter) directs that power to the rear wheels -- no 4Matic all-wheel-drive is offered, unlike on the S63 AMG. As a result of the difficulty in delivering that power to the road through just two wheels, the S65 AMG coupe is one-tenth of a second slower to 60 mph than the S63 AMG, at 4.0 seconds, although both cars have an impressive top speed of 186 mph.

Along with the engine, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG coupe receives a smattering of chassis upgrades. The AMG sport suspension features Active Curve Control, which leans into turns to keep occupants more comfortable, as well as Road Surface Scan and Magic Body Control, which "read" the road surface and adjust the suspension to filter out bumps and imperfections. The S65 AMG has unique suspension tuning compared to other S-Class coupe models, as well as enlarged brakes with gray-painted calipers. Carbon-ceramic brakes are optional and 20 percent lighter than the standard steel ones. The car rides on 20-inch wheels with 16 twisted spokes, which have a special screw-on center cap designed to mimic the look of racing-style center-lock wheels.

Visual differentiation begins with unique front and rear fascias, new side skirts, and striking dual chrome exhaust tips. The S65 AMG coupe also benefits from a Nappa leather interior, stainless-steel door sill plates, a three-spoke steering wheel, and a speedometer that reads to 220 mph. Standard equipment includes a color head-up display, a Burmester surround-sound system, push-button start, and adaptive cruise control.

Pricing for the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG coupe has yet to be announced, but we expect it to cost a little more than the S65 sedan, which stickers for $224,625 after destination and gas guzzler taxes. Order books for the S65 AMG coupe open this summer, with the first cars reaching U.S. showrooms by the end of the year.

I'm definitely not the target customer for this car, but I really can't get excited for this thing. MB's new style language is bland and the tack-on "spirt trim" doesn't help it. If I had the money, I'd get a top end Jag. A V12 makes the car exclusive at least, but it'll still be worth 1/4 it's sticker price in 3 years.
