2015 Acura NSX Prototype Burns at the Nurburgring

Remember that 2015 Acura NSX prototype we spied going around the Nürburgring a few days ago? Well, this hybrid-powered supercar has now followed in the footsteps of many Ferrari, Porsche, and Lamborghini supercars before it by bursting into flames and burning to a crisp during its track time.

Our spy photographers caught these photos of the hollowed-out NSX shell after the fire died down. We don’t know exactly what caused the car to go up in flames, but it’s a safe bet that something went wrong with the 2015 Acura NSX’s battery pack. This supercar is powered by a hybrid drivetrain that combines a twin-turbocharged V-6 engine with three electric motors, so it’s possible that the car’s lithium-ion battery pack overheated from hard driving or had some sort of electrical short to ignite the blaze. Alternatively, it's possible the gasoline engine caused the conflagration.

Apparently both test drivers escaped the car safely, but the burning NSX did closed the track for more than an hour. Photos of the crispy aftermath show that the car’s roof completely collapsed, the mid-mounted engine bay was burned throughout, and even the dashboard was burned through to the foam insulation. We can see the basic shape of the burned interior that show the workings of a dual-screen infotainment setup with a lower touchscreen and a higher information screen that’s set back into the center of the dash. It’s the first time we’ve seen the new 2015 Acura NSX’s interior in the flesh since the concept debuted, making it even more unfortunate that it’s been mostly ravaged by the fire.

Let’s hope that this fire isn’t a huge bump in the road in the NSX’s development, as the car is expected to debut at the 2015 Detroit auto show in just a few months before going on sale later in 2015. Stay tuned for more news about the 2015 Acura NSX as the company hopefully builds another prototype to work out the kinks in this high-performance hybrid supercar.
