Report: Next Volvo S80 Will Use XC90 Interior

When the Volvo S80 sedan is updated in about two years' time, it will have a cabin inspired by the futuristic looks of the 2015 Volvo XC90 crossover. According to Autocar, the S80 is the next model in line to get Volvo's latest interior style. The luxury sedan will reportedly be redesigned in two to three years.

The 2015 Volvo XC90, which will be fully revealed this August, has a wholly new interior design (pictured here) that dispenses with Volvo's traditional button-laden center stack in favor of an enormous touchscreen. In addition, the XC90's cabin gets an assortment of high-end materials that help it stand out as the Swedish automaker attempts to pitch the XC90 against luxury marques like Audi, BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz.

So far, the automaker has revealed that the 2015 Volvo XC90 will offer Nappa leather, real wood trim, and a shifter made from Orrefors crystal. A color touchscreen takes up almost the entire center stack, and runs infotainment software called Sensus. It essentially divides in-car functions into several "tiles," and is designed to mimic the performance of a tablet computer. It will provide both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. The system even works if drivers are wearing gloves.

Expect the 2015 Volvo XC90's interior style and the infotainment system to carry over to the next Volvo S80 almost totally unchanged. It will mark a huge departure from the current car's staid cabin and dated technologies.

The Volvo S80 received a mild facelift for 2014, but the all-new version reportedly due in 2016 or 2017. needs to make big leaps to improve the model's sales. Last year, Volvo sold only 1935 copies of the luxury sedan in the U.S., and so far this year the car is averaging fewer than 167 sales per month.

When the Volvo S80 is redesigned, it will likely follow the footsteps of the new 2015 Volvo XC90 and migrate to Volvo's SPA modular architecture. That will allow the use of new, fuel-efficient Drive-E engines, including the turbocharged 2.0-liter, and the turbo- and supercharged 2.0-liter.
