Recalls: Chevrolet Camaro, Toyota Airbags, Honda Fit

2010-2014 Chevrolet Camaro

The Problem: If drivers are sitting too close to the steering column, the driver’s knee can bump the key fob and cause it to move out of the “Run” position. This is unrelated to the ignition switch recall in the Chevrolet Cobalt and other small cars, as the Camaro’s ignition switch meets GM engineering specifications, but it could still lead to drivers accidentally shutting off the car.

The Fix: Chevrolet will give Camaro owners new key fobs that keep the key and fob components separate, as opposed to the existing fob which has a switchblade-style retractable key. This means that contact with the key fob won’t affect the key’s position in the ignition.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 464,712 2010-2014 Chevrolet Camaro coupes and convertibles

2002-2004 Toyota Sequoia, Lexus SC;2003-2004 Toyota Corolla, Toyota Matrix, Toyota Tundra, Pontiac Vibe

The Problem: A defect in the passenger-side front airbag inflator may create excessive internal pressure, which could cause the inflator to rupture when the airbag is deployed. If the inflator ruptures in a crash, metal fragments could strike the occupants of the car.

The Fix: Dealers will replace the passenger side airbag inflator free of charge. This recall overrides an earlier Toyota airbag recall, when some Corolla and Matrix models were inspected and received replacement inflators, and others were inspected and did not receive a replacement. All vehicles are subject to this recall regardless of what earlier action was taken.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 844,277 2002-2004 Toyota Sequoia SUVs and Lexus SC convertibles, 2003-2004 Toyota Corolla, Toyota Matrix, Toyota Tundra, and Pontiac Vibe models.

2004-2011 Saab 9-3 Convertible

The Problem: The automatic tensioning system cable in the driver’s side front seat belt retractor can break, meaning that the seatbelt would not retract after being pulled out by the driver.

The Fix: Dealers will replace the entire driver’s side seatbelt retractor in affected vehicles.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 28-789 2004-2011 Saab 9-3 convertibles.

2012 Chevrolet Sonic

The Problem: In automatic transmission models with the 1.8-liter engine, the transmission turbine shaft may fracture, meaning that the vehicle could not shift into third through sixth gears if this happens when the vehicle is in first or second gear. If the shaft fractures when in a higher gear, the vehicle would coast until it reaches a slow enough speed to downshift into first or second gear. If the driver continues to operate the car after the shaft has fractured, all forward gears may become inoperable, although the engine would continue to run.

The Fix: Dealers will replace the transmission turbine shaft.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 21,567 2012 Chevrolet Sonic models equipped with the 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.

2014 Buick LaCrosse

The Problem: A wiring splice in the driver’s door may corrode and break, meaning that it could communicate incorrect information to circuits controlling the door chime, the power windows, and the sunroof.

The Fix: To determine whether a replacement electric splice is necessary, dealers will inspect the driver door window motor harness.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 14,765 2014 Buick LaCrosse sedans.

2013 Honda Fit

The Problem: Due to an improper heat treatment application during the manufacturing process, the passenger side driveshaft in manual transmission vehicles may break while driving. This would cause the vehicle to lose power and coast to a stop. If the vehicle is parked without the parking brake applied, the car could move unexpectedly.

The Fix: Dealers will inspect the driveshaft and replace it if necessary.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 1038 2013 Honda Fit hatchbacks equipped with a manual transmission and produced between May 24 and July 5, 2013.
