European Ford Focus ST Adds Diesel Version

European hot hatchback fans now have another diesel option. The 2015 Ford Focus ST, which was refreshed worldwide, will offer a diesel engine as an option in Europe. The arrival of a diesel-fired Focus ST has been rumored for a long time, as it will allow Ford to compete with the Volkswagen GTD.

The 2015 Ford Focus ST diesel has a 2.0-liter turbodiesel inline-four rated for 182 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Although that's far less than the 252 hp offered from the gasoline-powered Focus ST, the diesel has 25 lb-ft more torque, and the torque peak arrives 500 rpm earlier, at just 2000 rpm. Ford says the Focus ST diesel hits 60 mph in 8.1 seconds, compared to a claimed 6.5 seconds for the gasoline version. The upshot is far greater fuel efficiency, equivalent to 53 mpg in European testing. The 2015 Ford Focus ST is rated at 23/32 mpg (city/highway) in the U.S.

It's also worth noting that the diesel version of the Focus ST has far quicker in-gear acceleration times. Ford says the model's prodigious torque allows it to accelerate from 50 to 75 mph in sixth gear in just 9.7 seconds, versus 11.9 seconds for the standard car. However, the diesel's top speed is just 135 mph to the gasoline Focus ST's 154 mph.

The 2015 Ford Focus ST is unlikely to be sold in the U.S., given that Ford doesn't currently sell any versions of the Focus with the diesel on our shores. In Europe, the model was easy to produce as the Focus already was available with a 2.0-liter turbodiesel rated for 148 hp. To add more power for the Focus ST, Ford simply reprogrammed the diesel's engine computer, fitted a sports exhaust, and added a less-restrictive air intake.

In Europe, the main competition for the 2015 Ford Focus ST is the Volkswagen GTD. A diesel version of the famous GTI, the latest GTD offers 184 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, closely matching the Focus's performance figures.
