Aston Martin is the latest company to develop a wild concept car for the PlayStation video game Gran Turismo 6. The Aston Martin DP-100 will be available to drive virtually from next month, and shows how an Aston Martin sports car could look if designers were given a, "blank sheet of paper."
The Aston Martin DP-100, for Design Prototype 100, is a wide, hunkered-down design that has little in common with the rest of the company's elegant models. While the lower grille opening is familiar to other Astons, the car's enormous front fenders, steeply sloped nose, and enormous rear end have little in common with, say, a Vanquish. An enormous aerodynamic diffuser defines the car's tail, and myriad flaps and cut-outs help channel air around the DP-100's body. Many of the aerodynamic components are active, meaning they move at speed to constantly optimize the level of downforce available.
Beneath all that bodywork is a mid-mounted twin-turbo V-12 engine that gives the Aston Martin DP-100 800 hp. In the cabin, snug bucket seats are made from carbon fiber, matching the minimalist carbon-fiber dashboard and flat-bottom steering wheel. Aston Martin says it has even developed a real suspension and a full electrical system for the car, even though the DP-100 won't go into production.
The Aston Martin DP-100 is far from the first extreme sports car concept conceived for download in Gran Turismo 6. In recent weeks, Nissan showed its 2020 Vision GT, Volkswagen revealed a digital GTI Roadster concept, and Mitsubishi showed the XR-PHEV hybrid.
