2016 Ford Focus RS Spied

#Ford, #Ford

Providing some visual confirmation for long-standing rumors, our spy photographers spotted a Ford Focus RS prototype in Michigan. The hot hatchback has several readily visible performance upgrades compared to the standard Ford Focus ST, and could go on sale next year as a 2016 model.

Though this Ford Focus RS test mule is based on a standard ST hatchback, it clearly packs more performance. This prototype rides on 19-inch wheels, instead of the 18s used by the Focus ST, and they're wrapped in sticky Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires measuring 235/35/19. Compare that to the regular Ford Focus ST, which has 18-inch tires with Goodyear Eagle F1 tires. Behind those wheels lurk considerably enlarged front brake calipers, which our source surmises may have been sourced from Brembo, as are the optional high-performance stoppers on the Ford Mustang.

For more evidence this hacked-up ST might actually be a Ford Focus RS, look to the dual rear exhausts and redesigned front fascia. The former marks a big departure from the angular, center-exit exhaust on the current Ford Focus ST, while the latter appears to have a prominent lower opening to channel air to an intercooler. Both of those elements might signal that this car has more power under the hood.

Reports suggest the Ford Focus RS will use a version of the new 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged inline-four engine that's slated for duty in the 2015 Ford Mustang. In the 2015 Ford Mustang, the 2.3-liter EcoBoost will produce at least 305 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, whereas the current Ford Focus ST's 2.0-liter EcoBoost inline-four engine offers up just 252 hp and 270 lb-ft. For the RS, somewhere in the range of 300-330 hp is expected.

The increase in power brings worries of more torque steer for the front-wheel-drive Focus platform, leading many sources to infer the Ford Focus RS will adopt all-wheel drive. However, as Ford doesn't currently offer any version of the Focus with all-wheel drive, adding it for the RS would be a big stretch.

A Ford spokesman declined to comment on the possibility of a Ford Focus RS, saying simply that, "We can't speculate or comment on future vehicles or plans." He also declined to comment on whether Ford could ever build an all-wheel-drive version of the Focus.

If a Ford Focus RS does materialize, reports suggest a Fiesta RS will follow. The hopped-up Fiesta would reportedly produce around 230 hp, compared to the 197 hp on tap today from the car's 1.6-liter turbocharged engine.

The Escape comes with an AWD option. It would not be a problem putting AWD under the Focus. The engineering is already done.
John Boho
The fiesta st should be AWD to compete with the gti for 3 door hatches. Leave the focus fwd. The focus should increase its luggage space, because honestly that's the only place it's lacking. I'd take an Audi A3 over the focus any day, maybe even a MS3. Also, reduce the price too.

Another vote for AWD

How bout less doors and more style
Jeff Schulz
Awd option.
Craig Stishenko
Michael I agree. However the mk7 isnt night and day better. It is merely different with some updated features.
Josh Henson
Whack to the future?
Mike Samol
Needs more power and much better handling
Michael Anderson
Have you ever sat in a gti john? Now have you ever sat in the even better new gti? I have, and ive been in an st. Its like night and day for quality of materials and dash design. The focus interior is a mess of bad ideas
Kyle Hubick
It's got too much already
Craig Stishenko
Awd or dont bother
Roy Brewer
No. But it could use less doors.
Andrew Denk
Diff needed! With the electronics... Torque steer to the max if this happens... Could be great but, for the price (inevitably higher) much better options out there to be had
John Lopez
You had me until you compared it to an entry level Merc =P

Why? When I see this car I see a 20 year old fella with his young pregnant wife and a 6 month old baby in a car seat in the back seat.
Maxx Marcel Jones
it needs a new dash ip design, stiffer steering, larger brakes wheels n tires...deeper exhaust and recaro seats...and 260hp
Vinny Aces
The 2014 focus se 2.0 lacks power low end w/ auto trans. 0/50 too slow ..50/110 good, acceptable .
Robert Schmidt
Already has too much power.....
Raymond Doherty
I have an ST (2014) and it needs an LSD if it's going to get any more power, AWD would drive up the cost and the weight.
Michael Anderson
The new gti is faster, better looking, is smaller on the outside yet bigger on the inside, and has the luxury equivalent of a low-end mercedes.

It's a chick car (my gf just bought one) but it's fun to drive. I'm 6'2 and have no issues with head room
Cory Butterwick
it needs more chassis development and a REAL lsd (not brake based) my 09 cobalt ss buries a focus with similar power figures
Chip Gorra
What it really needs is some ROOM in it: it's sized like a sub-compact car inside: terrible use of space, and damned near impossible for a tall driver to get comfortable!
Lane Morrow
You do realize the Focus ST is among the best handling FWD cars available today right?
Lane Morrow

No clue what you're talking about.  The car has near 260hp right now.  The tires and brakes work like magic.  You don't have experience with the car obviously.
I have a 2009 COBALT SS with G85/LSD and it still has TS. This is why its WWD ! lol
Lane Morrow
Faster??  Maybe by a hair depending on driver, not better looking in many peoples minds.  You're drunk on VW Koolaide.
Lane Morrow
Not a chick car at all.  Your girl is cool for buying one though.
Lane Morrow
Its a Chevy, didn't sell and that's why its gone.  BTW had your recalls done?
I have a 09 cobalt SS to and even with G85 and LSD it has TS. I dont think you can get away from it. And my car only has GMS1 and not a real dyno tune like HP or Trifecta even.
