2015 Volkswagen Golf and Golf GTI Rated Top Safety Pick +

Volkswagen is putting a lot of effort into launching the redesigned 2015 Volkswagen Golf and Golf GTI, and the company now has another piece of ammo to use when appealing to new customers. Both of these two hatchbacks have been rated Top Safety Pick + by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the organization’s highest rating.

This award applies to 2015 Volkswagen Golf and 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI models equipped with the optional forward collision warning system that comes with the available Driver Assistance Package. This active safety system was rated as “Basic” under the IIHS’ testing criteria, and the 2015 Golf and GTI also earned “Good” ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, head restraint, and small overlap front crash tests. Models without the forward collision warning system still earn the standard Top Safety Pick rating.

It is interesting to note that the 2015 Volkswagen Golf and Golf GTI will not qualify for the new, revised 2015 Top Safety Pick + criteria. To earn the TSP+ under these stricter requirements, cars with forward collision warning systems must be rated Advanced or Superior. To earn enough points or these higher forward collision ratings, vehicles must go beyond a simple visual or audio forward collision warning and offer an actual automatic braking system when an obstacle is detected.

The 2015 Volkswagen Golf and Golf GTI join a growing list of small cars that earn the TSP+ rating, including the 2014 Honda Civic, the 2014 Mazda 3, and the 2014 Toyota Prius. The Golf and GTI’s 2015 Audi A3 sibling also earns the top IIHS rating.

The 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI went on sale last month for a starting price of $25,215 with destination, and the standard 2015 Volkswagen Golf will arrive at dealerships in August at a base price of $18,815 for the three-door Golf Launch Edition.
