If there’s anything to be said about Subaru driver Mark Higgins, it’s that he’s brutally persistent. Maybe even a little insane. Only two days after breaking his own record on the Isle of Man TT course by 30 seconds, Higgins strapped in and beat that time by another 11 seconds behind the wheel of the 2015 Subaru WRX STI.
Higgins’ new record lap totaled 19 minutes and 15 seconds, during which he achieved an eye-popping average lap speed of 117.51 mph—more than 1 mph faster than on his previous run. Apparently Higgins felt that even during this year’s first record-breaking run, a handful of errors slowed him down. Resolute in his commitment to ultimate speed, Higgins and the practically stock 2015 Subaru WRX STI laid down a lap time that we imagine is going to be tough to beat.

“I can’t say enough about the new WRX STI and how much abuse it has taken as we have really ridden it hard over this course for three very fast runs,” said Higgins in a statement. “The chassis on this new car is just night and day.”
The 2015 Subaru WRX STI used for the Isle of Man TT race is surprisingly close to stock, with only mildly adjusted springs and dampers to handle the extreme conditions of the course. Subaru swapped out the stock rubber for Dunlop Direzza tires, and added a racing-spec roll cage, race harness, and fire extinguisher, as well as a louder straight exhaust so the crowd could hear the 2015 Subaru WRX STI coming from a long way off. The top-speed limiter was also removed, letting the 305-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer-four unleash its full potential.

Our hat goes off to Higgins, who seems to perfectly channel the persona of a questionably sane 2015 Subaru WRX STI owner. He clearly knows the risks of going fast on the Isle of Man; he nearly wiped out at the bottom of the course’s Bray Hill going 150 mph back in 2011, before saving himself and the 2011 Subaru WRX STI with a monumental powerslide.
“Setting the record was both the most exhilarating and the most frightening thing I have ever done,” said Higgins. Ever the adrenaline junkie, something tells us he’s already planning how to beat his own record next year.
