Remember the Mitsubishi Lancer? This forgotten compact car has been around in its current form since 2007 and receives some mechanical, cosmetic, and equipment updates for 2015 to bring it slightly more in touch with the times, at least in terms of technology and looks.

The major mechanical change for the 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer (the 2014 model is pictured) is the addition of a new continuously-variable transmission (CVT) that has a wider ratio spread than the old CVT, which is meant to be equivalent to a seven-speed automatic transmission. This new CVT pairs with the Lancer ES model’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and is a $900 option over the base five-speed manual transmission. We don’t yet know whether this new transmission will improve the 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer’s fuel economy ratings of 26/34/29 mpg (city/highway/combined) as it did in the related 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, but we can only hope so given how uncompetitive these numbers are in the current fleet of compact cars.
Otherwise, all 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer models gain new heated side mirrors, and there are some new equipment packages for certain trim levels. The base ES gains a new optional Value Package that includes 16-inch alloy wheels, Mitsubishi’s Fuse smartphone integration system, rear disc brakes, and some upgraded interior trim. The SE model—which comes standard with a larger 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive—has all of this same equipment as standard for 2015, and also gains a sportier-looking front fascia and a six-speaker audio system. Finally, the GT model has some new interior trim, and a Sun and Sound Package that adds a sunroof, a nine-speaker Rockford Fosgate sound system, and HID headlights.
All of these updates apply to the standard Lancer sedan and Lancer Sportback hatchback models, and the turbocharged Lancer Ralliart model is unchanged for 2015. Mitsubishi has also not yet announced anything about the performance-oriented 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.
