Fifteen-passenger versions of the 2015 Ford Transit van will feature the largest airbag Ford has ever offered. The new side-curtain airbag spans all five rows of the vehicle's interior, helping protect the van's passengers in a crash or rollover accident.
When fully deployed, the 2015 Ford Transit airbag measures 15 feet long and three feet tall. The side-curtain airbag in a Ford Fusion sedan, by contrast, measures just 6.8 feet long and two feet tall. Despite its prodigious size, Ford says the Transit's five-row airbag can still inflate in less than a second. The airbag uses two separate inflators, and they are claimed to be the largest airbag inflators used in any production car. In addition to the giant side-curtain airbag, the 2015 Ford Transit comes standard with side airbags for the two front seats.
The 2015 Ford Transit seats 15 passengers when equipped in its high-roof, long-wheelbase configuration. In other variants -- the van offers three roof heights and two different wheelbases -- the passenger version of the Transit can seat 8, 10, or 12 passengers. The 2015 Ford Transit is also offered as a cargo van that has just two front seats so the rear can be used for carrying gear.
The 2015 Ford Transit offers a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 and a 3.7-liter V-6 engine that each return 14/19 mpg (city/highway), and a turbodiesel engine for which fuel economy has not yet been announced. The 2015 Ford Transit goes on sale this summer, with the cargo van starting at $30,560 and the passenger versions at $33,095, after destination fees.
