2015 BMW 2 Series Adds xDrive All-Wheel Drive

The Manufacturer Daniel Byrne

The 2015 BMW 2 Series will be offered with all-wheel drive, whereas the cars are currently available only as rear-wheel-drive coupes. For the new model year, BMW will add the 228i xDrive and M235i xDrive models to its 2 Series lineup.

Aside from the addition of all-wheel drive, the 2015 BMW 2 Series has few other mechanical changes. The 228i xDrive will use the same 240-hp, 2.0-liter inline-four engine as the rear-drive model, while the M235i xDrive will continue to employ a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six good for 322 hp. Whereas rear-drive cars offer a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic, the xDrive versions will be available only with an automatic transmission transmission.

Pricing for the 2015 BMW 2 Series xDrive models is only $1800 more than for rear-drive cars, although the sticker prices for all 2 Series coupes rise slightly for 2015. The 228i coupe now starts at $33,050 with destination, the 228i xDrive is $34,850, the M235i coupe starts from $44,050, and the M235i xDrive costs $45,850.

The 2015 BMW 2 Series also gains a new Track Handling package. As was previously announced, the upgrade can be applied to the 228i with manual or automatic transmissions, and with or without xDrive. It lowers the car by 0.4 inch, and adds Adaptive M suspension, Variable Sport Steering, M Sport Brakes, and 18-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. On versions of the 2015 BMW 228i with the M Sport or Sport Line trim packs, the Track Handling package costs $1600; for cars without those upgrades, adding Track Handling requires $2200.

The 2015 BMW 2 Series goes on sale this summer.
