BMW has finally earned itself a spot on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick + list with the 2014 BMW 2 Series. Surprising as it may be, this makes the 2 Series the first BMW to ever earn either of the IIHS’ top ratings, which are called Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick +.
2014 Bmw 2 Series Iihs Small Overlap
The compact BMW 2 Series earns this award as a result of its “Good” ratings in each of the IIHS’ crashworthiness tests, which include moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, head restraints, and the challenging small overlap front crash test. No other BMW model had previously been rated “Good” or even “Acceptable” in the small-overlap test; an “Acceptable” rating is the minimum requirement for the Top Safety Pick award.
The extra "+" designation is because of the 2014 BMW 2 Series’ optional front crash prevention technology that was rated “Advanced” by the IIHS. This automatic braking feature is included in the 2 Series’ optional Active Driving Assistant feature, which is included in the Driver Assistance Plus package. Adding this $700 package also requires adding the standard $950 Driver Assistance Package and the $2150 Technology Package, making this safety feature cost a total of $3800.
Take note that the 2014 BMW 2 Series meets the current, 2014 IIHS Top Safety Pick + requirements, and should continue to meet the revised requirements for the 2015 Top Safety Pick + designation. While previously a “Basic” rating for front crash prevention systems qualified a car for the TSP+, the new criteria require that these systems be rated “Advanced” or “Superior,” a requirement which the BMW 2 Series meets.
The 2014 BMW 2 Series is available in two models: the 240-hp, four-cylinder 228i and the 300-hp, six-cylinder M235i. The 228i model starts at $33,025 and the M235i costs $44,025 with destination.
