Report: Porsche Cayenne Five-Door Coupe Planned for 2018

While the BMW X6 once existed as an anomaly in the SUV marketplace, reports suggest that it’s about to get another counterpart. According to Autocar, Porsche is planning to bring out a sportier, coupe-like Cayenne in 2018. The new model will be one of seven MLB-based SUVs to come from Volkswagen Group.

The next-generation Porsche Cayenne is expected to arrive in 2017, and this sportier Cayenne variant will ride on the same MLB platform. First to hit the market later this year will be the new, MLB-based Audi Q7, which will then spawn its own coupe-like Q8 variant.

Like the Q8, the coupe-like Porsche Cayenne will offer a range of gasoline, diesel, and plug-in hybrid-electric powertrains. Expect the Porsche plug-in hybrid to be closely related to the rumored Audi Q8 e-tron, while the familiar line of GTS, Turbo, and Diesel models will also be available. Atop the heap should be a twin-turbo, 550-hp, V-8-powered, Turbo S version. Autocar predicts that the Cayenne coupe will be priced 15 to 20 percent higher than the base Cayenne, with the 3.0-liter V-6 model starting at around $84,000.

Autocar learned from a senior Porsche official that the Cayenne coupe has been in the works for a while now, but limited production capacity at the company’s Liepzig factory has delayed the project.

Unsurprisingly, the coupe-like Porsche Cayenne will adopt sharper styling and a lower ride height to reflect its sportier, on-road aspirations. The new car’s interior will match that of the next-gen Cayenne coming in 2017, which in some respects will trickle down from the 918 Spyder supercar.

Mercedes-Benz already revealed its MLC, a five-door coupe-like variant of the M-Class, meaning Porsche will be diving into a competitive ring by the time it arrives in 2018. We’ll have to wait until the Audi Q8 arrives to get a good sense of what the Cayenne five-door coupe might look like, but it’s likely Porsche will espouse the sloping rear window, short overhangs, and high beltline seen on the X6 and MLC.
