Mazda Miata Anniversary Edition Sells Out In 10 Minutes

The editors of Automobile Magazine aren't the only ones who are fans of the Mazda Miata, as proven by the fact that a limited-run anniversary model of the car sold out just ten minutes after it went on sale yesterday. All 100 copies of the 2015 Mazda Miata 25th Anniversary Edition were spoken for after pre-ordering opened up online.

Mazda described the enthusiastic reception to the car, "not entirely unexpected but a pleasant surprise nonetheless."

As its name suggests, this version of the Mazda Miata pays tribute to the fact that the car is now 25 years old, having debuted at the 1989 Chicago auto show. The 25th Anniversary Edition car has a power-retractable hardtop; Soul Red Metallic paint; contrasting black paint for the A-pillars, mirrors, windshield header, and 17-inch wheels; special 25th Anniversary fender badges; aluminum pedals; red interior stitching, and various chrome interior trim pieces. Models with the six-speed manual transmission also score Bilstein shock absorbers, while all versions benefit from hand-picked engine components, which Mazda implies will make the car's 2.0-liter inline-four engine rev "even more freely" than normal.

Pricing for the 2015 Mazda Miata 25th Anniversary Edition reflects its exclusivity, with the car starting at $33,000 after destination with a manual transmission and $33,450 with an automatic. Because production is limited to just 100 cars, Mazda planned to allow up to 250 people to place online pre-orders; the first 100 of those select a transmission type and then coordinate with their local Mazda dealership to pick up the car. Each buyer of the 25th Anniversary car also receives a special-edition Tourneau watch with special logos and a matched red-and-black stitched band.
