2015 Dodge Challenger Adds "600-Plus" HP Supercharged Engine

Following the introduction of the refreshed 2015 Dodge Challenger at the 2014 New York auto show, and the announcement that Dodge would offer a 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 engine, the company has now put those two elements together and announced a version of the Challenger with more than 600 hp and 575 lb-ft of torque.

While exact output numbers haven't been confirmed, the 6.2-liter "Hellcat" engine is said to be the most powerful Chrysler Group V-8 in history; its output will likely come close to the 640 hp that the SRT Viper extracts from its 8.4-liter V-10. To help the new V-8 produce that much power reliably, it benefits from a forged steel crankshaft, toughened bearings, and forged-alloy pistons. The engine's aluminum rocker covers are painted Hemi orange. Both an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and a traditional six-speed manual are offered.

Of course, not everyone can access the Hellcat's full fury: the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT will come with a red key that enables all 600-plus hp, and a black key that offers only 500 hhp The car also has a valet mode, enabled with a four-digit PIN, that limits the engine to 4000 rpm, doesn't allow disabling the traction control, disables launch control, turns off the paddle shifters, and similarly reduces overall output to 500 hp.

The 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat receives more than just a new engine. It rides on 20-inch wheels and Pirelli PZero Nero tires, and comes standard with the largest front brakes that the SRT division has ever offered: 15.4-inch Brembo rotors gripped by six-piston front calipers. The brakes and wheels are available as options on the standard, non-supercharged Challenger SRT 392.

Compared to the standard SRT 392, the Hellcat also wears a new front fascia that replaces the fog lights with small vertical air inlets, and a new splitter that's claimed to reduce aerodynamic lift at speed. A small inlet hole in the driver-side parking light allows cool air into the engine's intake. The hood has a non-functional center scoop that mimics the look of the hood on the first Dodge Viper coupe, as well as two heat-extraction vents that help cool the supercharged engine. "Supercharged" fender badges further help distinguish the Hellcat model, along with black side skirts and a black rear spoiler. Both the standard 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT and the Hellcat now benefit from retro-inspired taillights with a split design meant to recall the look of the 1971 car.

Inside, the Hellcat model gets a few unique touches compared to the standard 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT. Its gauges and digital display graphics have a Dark Radar Red color theme, and its aluminum center-console trim is colored "Dark Engine Turn." On the outside, the Hellcat will offer 11 different colors, many of which are inspired by historic Dodge Challenger paint schemes.

Dodge also announced today that all versions of the Challenger SRT 392 will now offer 485 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque, up from 470 hp and 470 lb-ft previously. At the New York show, Dodge said that only Challenger SRT models equipped with the Scat Pack option would receive the horsepower increase.

Pricing for the 2015 Dodge Challenger and its Hellcat variant will be announced closer to the on-sale date. The cars go into production this fall.

There is lots of Challenger and SRT haters out there. But truthfully how many Z28, ZL1, Boss 302, GT500, etc etc get taken to the track? 1 out of 10 - maybe? This car is a mean cruiser that offers enough to scare the pants off of anyone who will buy it, while still being a nice on highway ride. I'd drive one.

Awesome car. Too heavy to dominate the other two, but the clear choice for a comfortable, practical?, deep 11second car with a clearly superior interior over the others for now (ZL1 & GT500).
