The 2015 BMW X3 gains a new diesel version called the X3 xDrive28d this year, and this model now has official EPA fuel economy ratings of 27 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. That puts it ahead of its closest competitors, the diesel versions of the Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class and Audi Q5, in the efficiency rating race.
The 2015 BMW X3 xDrive28d is powered by the same 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine from the BMW 328d sedan and wagon. In the X3 crossover, it will produce 180 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, and pairs exclusively with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. The addition of the 28d model also accompanies a refresh for the 2015 BMW X3 which comprises updated styling front and rear, new upholstery and trim for the interior, new wheels, and a rear-wheel drive, gasoline-powered model called the sDrive 28i.
The BMW X3 xDrive28d will not be the first diesel-powered vehicle in the U.S. compact luxury crossover segment, as Audi and Mercedes-Benz already offer turbodiesel versions of the Q5 and GLK crossovers, respectively. These two models can’t quite match the X3 diesel in terms of fuel economy, as the Audi Q5 TDI is rated at 24/31/27 mpg city/highway/combined and the Mercedes-Benz GLK250 Bluetec achieves a 24/33/28 mpg rating. The diesel X3 also handily beats its gasoline-powered counterparts, unsurprisingly, as the xDrive and sDrive 28i models both achieve 21/28/24 mpg city/highway/combined.
We already reported that the 2015 BMW X3 xDrive28d will cost $42,825 with destination, and all versions of the 2015 BMW X3 are set to hit showrooms within the next few weeks.
