Report: BMW 9 Series Concept Headed for Beijing

BMW will be unveiling a new concept car at the Beijing auto show that’s said to preview a new range-topping flagship sedan called the 9 Series. According to a report from Automotive News Europe, this ultra-luxury sedan will ride on a new lightweight platform said to be shared between upcoming BMW and Rolls-Royce models.

It’s no surprise that BMW would show such a model in Beijing for the rapidly growing Chinese luxury market. Presumably this long-wheelbase BMW 9 Series would be an ideal car for moneyed types to be driven in by chauffeurs, just like the rumored stretched Mercedes-Benz S600 Pullman or extra-long-wheelbase model that’s expected for the Chinese market as well. What we don’t know is whether the 9 Series will simply be an extended version of the next-generation 7 Series, or a distinct model with unique styling.

ANE says that the next 7 Series and the 9 Series will at least share a new platform called G11, which will also be used for Rolls-Royce models in the future. This new modular chassis architecture is said to offer significant weight savings compared with the current long-wheelbase 7 Series (pictured). Both the new 7 Series and the production version of this 9 Series concept are expected to debut sometime next year. At this point, it’s unclear whether this range-topping BMW will be sold in the U.S. Currently, the V-12, extended wheelbase BMW 760Li represents the top of the 7 Series lineup on our shores.

Stay tuned for more news about this BMW 9 Series concept as it debuts in Beijing in a few weeks.
