Report: McLaren Finalizing Design for Entry-Level P13

McLaren isn’t about to rest on its laurels following the success of the McLaren 650S. There’s already a six-month waiting list for the 650S, but McLaren is hard at work finalizing the design for its next car -- an entry-level, 911-Turbo-fighting P13.

The future entry-level McLaren, codenamed P13, will sit comfortably below the new 650S now that the McLaren 12C is officially ending production. According to Motor Trend, McLaren product development head Mark Vinnels is taking his team through the last stages of development, which is as of now down to just two designs.

As we previously reported, the mid-engine McLaren P13 will be as light as possible so as to maximize the effectiveness of its 3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8. The engine, also used in the 650S and P1 hypercar, is expected to produce between 450 and 500 hp — slightly less than that of the Porsche 911 Turbo, and less than the aforementioned McLaren siblings. MT says it’s also possible that the McLaren P13 could downgrade to a turbocharged V-6 to help save weight and increase efficiency, but the V-8 is more likely at least for the car’s initial launch.

Like other McLaren models, the P13 will receive the British supercar brand’s high-performance valve-controlled adaptive dampers. The P13 will perhaps weigh less than 3000 lbs thanks to its carbon fiber tub and all-aluminum skin panels, giving it a very promising power-to-weight ratio.

McLaren’s Woking, England, plant can only support production of two models simultaneously, so production of the P13 will have to wait until the last top-shelf P1 is built toward the end of 2015. Motor Trend says that production volume will exceed 4000 vehicles annually, compared to just 375 total units for the P1. With a starting price of around $200,000, the P13 could be a serious performance bargain, especially compared to the outgoing 12C which begins at $239,400.

Check back with more details on the McLaren P13 over the coming months, as development moves forward.

boring to read that crap of "entry-level-against-911Turbo". MP4-12C or 650S is a Turbo/GT3 rival. and this is possible rival for some Carrera GTS, no more.

How can anyone use the word bargain when referring to a $200k car.  Most American's live in houses that cost less.
