Lexus NX Crossover Previewed for Beijing

Lexus is doubling its crossover lineup with the new Lexus NX that will debut at the Beijing auto show on April 20. Joining the popular Lexus RX crossover, the new NX will be a slightly smaller model that is likely to be based on a version of the Toyota RAV4’s platform.

From the teaser photo that Lexus has issued of the new NX, we can see that this crossover features a toned-down version of the angular styling seen on the Lexus LF-NX concept car from last year’s Frankfurt and Tokyo auto shows. Lexus’ spindle grille design looks to dominate the front end, with a split headlight design that mimics the Lexus IS sedan and RC coupe’s distinctive lighting elements. The profile is much more conventional, abandoning the wild, angular fender bulges of the polarizing LF-NX concept.

Two versions of the Lexus NX are likely to make it to the U.S.: a hybrid version, possibly called NX 300h, and a gasoline version, possibly called NX 200t using a new turbocharged four-cylinder from Toyota. This new engine, with its greater combination of efficiency and power, will help Toyota catch up to luxury competitors like BMW and Audi, who widely use turbocharged four-cylinders throughout their lineup. This turbocharged engine should also make its way into the Lexus IS compact sport sedan.

Stay tuned for more news about the Lexus NX crossover as it debuts in China in a few weeks.
