Feature Flick: 2014 Cadillac ELR Range Challenge

While it might cost more than twice as much as the Chevrolet Volt on which it is based, the 2014 Cadillac ELR has a certain luxury appeal to it that could coax well-to-do types into the flashy two-door hybrid. Cadillac claims a 340-mile driving range when ELR’s gas tank and battery are full, so videographer Sandon Voelker set out to see if the 2014 Cadillac ELR could take him through a weekend driving around Michigan.

From our editorial offices in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Voelker planned to drive as far north as Big Rapids on his approximately 380-mile loop. Unsurprisingly, the ELR’s 1.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine, lithium-ion battery pack, and dual electric motors wouldn’t take him that far, but he soon discovered that the Cadillac ELR isn’t a car meant for all-or-nothing hypermilers.

As a proper luxury vehicle, complete with sexy coupe looks, supple leather interior, and advanced modern safety tech, the ELR excels by combining these qualities with a modern electric drivetrain. But, make no mistake, the Cadillac ELR is an outlier. It’s not the most efficient hybrid out there, with its 37-mile all-electric range and its combined rating of 33 mpg with the gasoline engine, nor is it part of the performance direction that Cadillac is moving toward, given that the ELR is a 4050-pound front-wheel-drive hybrid – the rest of Cadillac’s lineup consists of rear- and all-wheel-drive models.

Still, for those looking to enjoy the benefits of the Volt’s fabulous hybrid-electric drivetrain, but are more enticed by the Cadillac’s elegant looks and plush interior, the 2014 Cadillac ELR makes sense. If your tastes are perhaps less discerning, or budget won’t handle the ELR’s hefty $75,995 asking price, the 2014 Chevrolet Volt now costs just $34,995.

I don't think Cadillac is trying to lure VW owners. I agree $75k is crazy money, but I'm guessing there are those that can easily pay that. But probably not a VW owner. I'm still curious what the Tesla offers more? It doesn't have a IC engine (range extender) so I would be under constant range anxiety. Always having to plan that I'm not stranded on the road. And forget using in the cold North. All electric gets you nowhere.

I'll keep my VW golf Diesel.  it gets 45 mpg on the highway, has the amenities that work for me, has a very simple console (hint hint, GM...your CUE sucks), and didn't cost me near the $76K price they want for this.  Albeit, it's a beautiful car...but at the end of the day, it's certainly not worth the money.  Volt money...but not that money..

"I'm still curious what the Tesla offers more?"  0-60 in 5.9, 5.4, or 4.2 depending on the spec.  The ELR is in the 8 to 9 second range for the same money.  The free charging forever at supercharging stations is a nice perk also.
