2016 Audi R8 Spied at Nurburgring

#Audi, #R8

Audi let loose the next-gen R8 on the Nürburgring, and our spy photographers were there to snap some shots of the upcoming supercar’s test run. As expected, there don’t look to be any huge styling divergences from the current-gen R8 to this new model, but it’s possible there will be a new engine option under the hood.

Although heavily camouflaged, we can definitely see the resemblance to the baby-brother 2016 Audi TT recently shown in Geneva. The shapes and proportions, from the short front overhang to the low hood, elongated A-pillar and crescent shaped windows, to the long sloping roof, short decklid, and stubby rear end, all strike the same chord. In the R8 however, all the cuteness is tossed out in favor of serious performance threads.

Like the current R8, the next model will have the same low-mounted grille flanked by rectangular front intakes, an exaggerated side character line leading into the side intake that feeds the engine, a no-nonsense rear diffuser to maximize downforce, and a pop-up rear spoiler.

At the top of the line, unsurprisingly, we’ll see the same 5.2-liter V-10 engine that debuted at this year’s Geneva show in the 2015 Lamborghini Huracán, although perhaps with less power than the Lamborghini's 610 hp. Both V-8 and V-10 R8 models will be available with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, but sadly Audi development boss Ulrich Hackenberg has said there won't be a manual option. An Audi R8 e-tron plug-in hybrid could eventually join the supercar’s ranks, although no premiere date is set just yet.

We’ve already reported that the 2016 Audi R8 might end up with a smaller, turbocharged engine compared to the current 4.2-liter V-8 in the base model, in part because Audi must meet ever tougher emissions rules. It's unclear whether that would mean a turbocharged V-6 or V-8, and how output would compare to existing naturally aspirated engines.

Be sure to check back for more information on the upcoming 2016 Audi R8 as we hear more over the coming months.
