We suspected that Jaguar was planning upgraded R-S and R-S GT versions of the F-Type coupe with more power, but recent rumors suggest that a lightweight Club Sport model is also in the works. According to Auto Express, the Club Sport F-Type coupe would drop 440 pounds from the existing F-Type R, helping it sprint from 0-60 mph in less than 3.5 seconds.
Expect Jaguar to give its Club Sport F-Type a full treatment of lightweight carbon fiber upgrades and high-performance aerodynamics. The lightweight model (reportedly estimated at 3230 pounds or less, compared to the standard F-Type R Coupe's 3638-pound mass) is sure to appease speed freaks with a stripped-down interior, carbon racing seats, and improved handling at high speeds.
Unlike the F-Type R-S and R-S GT, which would presumably receive tuned versions of the F-Type R’s 5.0-liter supercharged V-8, the Club Sport model might look to downsize for weight saving benefits. “You get down to a critical mass of weight savings once we go so far and then we can start downsizing brakes and engines and things,” F-Type program director Russ Varney told Auto Express. “As a powertrain, the V-8 is superb but the V-6 has its advantages for that style of car, too.”
The current 2015 Jaguar F-Type S coupe, with its supercharged 3.0-liter V-6, makes a beefy 380 hp. Whether or not the Club Sport will opt for V-6 power rather than the 550 hp from the V-8, power-to-weight ratio remains the more significant measurement when it comes to performance. If Jaguar does give the Club Sport the V-6, it would serve to distinguish the model from the more-powerful R-S and R-S GT models, giving F-Type buyers an even wider range of performance options.
Varney told Auto Express that Jaguar would need to sell around 500 units a year to justify production, compared to the roughly 50 units expected for the racing-spec F-Type R-S GT.
