Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Toyota Issue New Recalls

2012-2013 Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Problem: The Ready Alert Braking function, which automatically primes the brakes when an imminent collision or aggressive stop is detected, resulted in brake pedal feel that was "not consistent with customer expectations." Chrysler maintains that brake function wasn't affected, and says that there are no reports of accidents due to this problem.

The Fix: The automaker will reprogram the anti-lock brake system so that it does not excessively restrict brake fluid flow, improving pedal feel.

Number Of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 18,700 2012-2013 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs in the U.S., plus another 6555 abroad.

2014 Fiat 500L

The Problem: The dual-clutch transmission used in the 2014 Fiat 500L may not allow drivers to shift out of Park, or it may take a long time to engage the gear that the driver selects. There are no reports of injuries due to this problem, but the investigation was prompted by customer complaints. Chrysler determined that extreme temperatures could affect an electronic component in the transmission from working correctly.

The Fix: Chrysler will reprogram the software for the optional dual-clutch automatic transmission. Of the affected cars, the company expects that about 200 models will need other components changed in order to work with the new software.

Number Of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 18,100 2014 Fiat 500L hatchbacks in the U.S., plus another 1400 in Canada.

2014 Toyota Highlander

The Problem: During assembly, the seatbelt for the middle seat in the third row may not have been "properly secured" to the vehicle, meaning the seatbelt might not adequately restrain a passenger during an accident. Toyota discovered the problem during a routine quality inspection.

The Fix: Toyota dealers will inspect the floor mounting point for the middle seatbelt and, if necessary, tighten it.

Number Of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 7067 2014 Toyota Highlander SUVs.
