Chrysler Group announced that its February 2014 sales totaled 154,866 vehicles, bringing year-to-date sales to 282,049 vehicles. These numbers represent an 11 percent increase over last February and a 10 percent gain compared to sales at this time last year. Despite the fact that car sales are down 15 percent for the month and 18 percent for the year so far, trucks and SUVs more than pulled their weight. Jeep posted its best February ever, and Ram put up its best February in the last eight years.
Winner: Jeep Brand, Up 47 Percent
On the shoulders of the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee, Jeep sales continue to surge. Each and every model reported sales gains, although over half of the month’s 45,946 vehicles sold came from the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee (11,795 and 12,691 units, respectively.) Even with fewer sales days in February compared to January 2014
, Jeep Cherokee sales still rose from last month’s 10,505. Clearly the sour review from Consumer Reports wasn’t enough to sway buyers, who continue to line up for the new compact SUV.
Winner: Chrysler 200, 12,046 Units Sold, Up 5 Percent
A five-percent increase to 12,046 vehicles sold may not sound like a lot, but the Chrysler 200
managed to be the only Chrysler Group passenger car to post a sales gain. Sales even improved compared to last month, up from January’s 10,912. It remains the third best-selling Chrysler Group vehicle, after the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram pickup. With the 2015 Chrysler 200 arriving this spring, there are most likely excellent deals available as Chrysler seeks to rid itself of still-unsold 200 vehicles.
Winner: Ram Pickup, 29,303 Units Sold, Up 26 Percent
The Ram pickup continues on as Chrysler’s primary volume vehicle, as expected. Sales grew considerably this past February, nearly eclipsing the 30,000 vehicle mark. Part of this growth has to do with the introduction of the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel
, which exceeded expectations at over 8,000 vehicles sold within three days of its opening. Although Ram is still behind the best-selling Ford F-150, it crept up a bit on the Chevrolet Silverado, which reported a sales decrease to 36,584 vehicles sold.
Loser: Fiat 500, 2,664 Units Sold, Down 19 Percent
Fiat’s struggles are already a familiar sight, and the skid shows no signs of slowing down. Sales of the Fiat 500 are down 11 percent to date compared to 2013, totaling 5,157 vehicles so far in 2014. Only 801 units of the Fiat 500L sold in February, which is more bad news for the brand’s long-term sustainability.
Loser: Dodge Dart, 4,888 Units Sold, Down 37 Percent
Chrysler Group’s passenger cars performed poorly overall, but the Dodge Dart posted the most dramatic losses. February’s 4,888 in sales are down 37 percent from 7,720 in February 2013. Year-to-date numbers are down a dismal 33 percent, and only the now-canceled Dodge Avenger performed worse in this category with a 34 percent drop compared to this time in 2013.
