If you're ready for a blast back to the 1950s, Fiat has a solution that's much cheaper than a time machine. The 2014 Fiat 500 1957 Edition debuted last fall at the Los Angeles auto show, and now the car’s price is set at $21,200 after destination fees. The Fiat 500 1957 Edition honors the first year that the Fiat Nuova Cinquecento was built.
At $21,200, the 2014 Fiat 500 1957 Edition will cost $1900 more than the Fiat 500 Lounge ($19,300) on which it is based. Powering the 1957 Edition is the Fiat 500’s 1.4-liter 101-hp inline-four engine, which is mated to either a standard five-speed manual or an optional six-speed automatic.
Special interior and exterior trim elements, infused with a decidedly retro flavor, make the Fiat 500 1957 Edition a funky throwback for Italophiles. Notable features include unique 16-inch wheels with historic “FIAT” center caps and body-colored rings, distinct badging, and three paint colors (white, light green, and pale blue.)
Compared to other special-edition small cars such as the Mini Cooper Clubman Bond Street, which adds $4,750 to the base Cooper Clubman’s starting price of $22,195, the 2014 Fiat 500 1957 Edition is a reasonably affordable upgrade. For somebody who is looking for just a little more Italian out of his or her modern 500, the 1957 Edition might just be worth the extra coin. The Fiat 500 1957 Edition will go on sale in late spring of this year.
