The revised 2014 Chevrolet Malibu has received a Top Safety Pick + rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This top rating is not only thanks to the Malibu’s improved performance on the IIHS’ difficult small overlap front crash test, but also due to the car’s available forward collision warning system.
Because the IIHS revised its rating system this year, all TSP+ vehicles must feature front crash prevention, meaning that only Malibu sedans equipped with the optional $890 Advanced Safety Package qualify for the IIHS’ highest rating. This low-cost package—which also includes lane departure warning and a blind spot monitor—makes the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu the second-cheapest car on our Top 10 Cheapest Cars with Active Safety Features list, with the Malibu 2LT so equipped costing a reasonable $29,105 with destination.
2014 Chevrolet Malibu models without the forward collision warning system still receive a standard Top Safety Pick award, though, thanks to a “Good” rating in the IIHS’ moderate overlap front, side impact, roof strength, and small overlap front crash tests. This is a significant improvement over the 2013 Malibu, which only received a “Marginal” rating in the stringent small overlap front crash test.
The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu is the first Chevrolet to be awarded the TSP+ rating. Other midsize sedans selected as current Top Safety Pick + winners include the 2014 Honda Accord, the 2014 Ford Fusion, and the 2014 Subaru Legacy.
