“Never in a million years did I ever think I’d be doing a Head 2 Head with Godzilla and a Camaro,” says host Johnny Lieberman of this week’s matchup. It’s amazing to see how far Chevrolet has come with the Camaro, and even more so with this latest 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. We know that the 2014 Nissan GT-R can outgun cars far out of its price range, but has the Z/28 come along to usurp its throne?
Lieberman tests Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 and the Nissan GT-R on three separate test locales: the twisty back roads of Alabama, the drag strip, and the track at Barber Motorsports Park. Since the Camaro Z/28 and the GT-R each use such different formulas to achieve their incredible performance capabilities, it’s fascinating to see where each the cars shine and falter.
The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 uses a 7.0-liter V-8 engine (from the outgoing Corvette Z06) that totals 505 hp and 481 lb-ft of torque. Power is directed to the rear wheels, shod in ultra-sticky Trofeo R tires, through a six-speed manual gearbox. The 2014 Nissan GT-R takes a wholly different approach, employing a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-6 (good for a walloping 545 hp) mated to a dual-clutch automatic transmission and sending power to all four wheels.
Although the GT-R was victorious on the drag strip in both the 0-60 mph sprint and the quarter-mile, the Camaro proved to be the more engaging and enjoyable driver’s car on the back roads and on the track. Both Lieberman and track driver Randy Pobst said the Z/28 felt much more alive and exciting, because the six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel-drive setup rewarded spirited driving and skill. The GT-R however, deserves due recognition for its missile-like acceleration and fearless performance character.
At $76,150 as tested, it’s clear at least that the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is much more financially accessible than the $116,750 2014 Nissan GT-R. Check out the video below for the full comparison, and let us know in the comments which you would rather drive.
